Hausa Stories: Praise Songs, Proverbs, and Saharan Wisdom

The Hausa-speaking peoples stretch across northern Nigeria, Niger, and into parts of Ghana, Cameroon, and Chad - one of the largest cultural groups in Africa, united by a common language that became the trade lingua franca of the Sahel. Hausa oral literature is dominated by three forms: labarun tatsuniyoyi (folktales), kirari (praise epithets), and karin magana (proverbs). Hausa proverbs are among the sharpest in the continent - "He who does not know one thing knows another" (Wanda ba ya sani guda ya san wani) - and storytellers deploy them with the precision of poets.

Hausa folktales often feature Zomo the Hare as a trickster figure analogous to Ananse in the south, but Hausa stories also include extensive royal court narratives reflecting the history of the Hausa city-states (Kano, Katsina, Zaria), epic tales of the Jihad founder Usman dan Fodio, and domestic moral tales about the relationships between co-wives, merchants, and scholars. Hausa storytelling was also traditionally a professional occupation - maroka (praise-singers) performed at courts and ceremonies, making oral literature a paid vocation centuries before the modern media industry. Mythopia's Hausa collection captures this breadth.
