Yoruba Mythology: Gods, Orishas, and the Cosmic Order
The Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria and Benin possess one of the most sophisticated and internally consistent mythological systems on earth. At its centre is a pantheon of divine forces called Orishas - hundreds of deities who govern everything from thunder and iron to love, rivers, and fate. The supreme creator Olodumare sent the first Orisha, Oduduwa, down from the heavens to form the earth from a mound of sand and a five-toed hen. From that act of creation the Yoruba traced their royal lineages and city-states, making mythology inseparable from history and governance.
Stories of Shango (lightning and kingship), Eshu (crossroads and communication), Ogun (iron and war), and Osun (the sacred river and feminine power) encode a complete moral and philosophical system that guided community life for centuries. These narratives did not remain in Nigeria - the Yoruba diaspora carried Orishas to Cuba (Santería), Brazil (Candomblé), Trinidad (Shango Baptist), and beyond, making Yoruba mythology one of the living religions of the modern Americas.
