Even shorter folktales carry moral and cultural weight: readers often compare how the lesson applies today, and how the same motif appears across regions. If you know another version from your family or community, Mythopia welcomes a respectful retelling so audiences can compare tone, detail, and local wisdom alongside this text.
Lion had stolen Ananse's fish,
and Ananse wanted revenge.
"Let's play a game!" said Ananse to Lion.
"We'll tie each other to a tree.
Here's some string; you tie me first."
Ananse gave Lion some thread,
and Lion tied Ananse to the tree.
Ananse easily broke the thread and got free.
Lion laughed. "This was fun! Now you tie me."
Ananse got out a big thick rope and tied Lion to the tree.
Lion struggled with all his strength,
but he couldn't break free.
Ananse laughed. "This is fun!"
Then he beat Lion with a stick and left him there.
